2020 NCAA College Football Playoff championship preview

This year is the sixth year of the College Football Playoffs (CFP). So far we have had just three different national champions under the system. Ohio State won the first one in 2015. Alabama won in 2016, and 2018. Clemson won in 2017 and last year, 2019. That list could expand come Monday, January 13th.

This year’s match-up has the number one ranked Louisiana State University (LSU) Tigers taking on the third-ranked, and defending national champion, Clemson University Tigers. Both teams come into the game at 14-0. The winner will be the second team since the 1900’s to go 15-0 in a game, joining last year’s Clemson team. It is LSU’s first championship game appearance since 2012, and they are seeking their first win since 2007.  Clemson on the other hand has an opportunity to win it’s third title in four years, and they are making their fourth CFP championship game in five years.

The game is set to be one with a lot of scoring. Both offenses are high powered. LSU is lead by Joe Burrow, the quarterback won the Heisman Award (award for colleges best player) this season. While Clemson’s quarterback is also a star, Trevor Lawrence. The sophomore has had a great season and had an amazing game in last years championship against Alabama. Clemson also has one of the strongest defense’s in the country. Lead by projected top-10 pick linebacker Isaiah Simmons. LSU is usually known for a strong defense and a weak offense. That has somewhat flipped this season but LSU still has a tough defense with Safety Grant Delpit and Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. Both are some of the best at their respective positions.

This game will come down to whether or not LSU’s defense can slow down Clemson’s offense and vice versa. LSU has one played one defense to this caliber, Auburn. They won that game but were held to a season low 23 points. Auburn also scored just 20 that game and didn’t have the best offense this season, Clemson has scored less than 23 just once back in September. If LSU struggles to score, Clemson’s offense is going to take advantage. If LSU can score easily their defense will take advantage of what little mistakes Clemson will make. Overall, it is going to be an amazing game to watch.
