Hunter Baseball weeks 4-5 recap

Gage Versteeg, Sports Editor

Two more weeks have gone by and Hunter now sits at 6-5 ,while going 2-1 in region play. Hunter’s Varsity baseball team started region play in week five. The only game of week four at Judge was rained out. The game against Highland was actually at the end of week three rather than in week four.

In the game against Highland we won by a score of 4-1. That game was quite the game for Jaxon Slack, he got two hits, including another home run, an RBI (coming from the home run) and got the his second win on the mound. He almost threw a complete game going six and two thirds innings. He struck out 11, walked three, gave up four hits and one run (one earned). Shadd Jones pitched the other third of an inning and got the save. Alex Villarreal got two hits including a double and drove in two runs, Quade Dunyon drove the other run in.

Week five saw us taking on Cyprus to open region play. In the first game we beat Cyprus by a score of 10-0 in five innings. Jaxon Slack had another great game with three RBIs. Jake Hancock in three at bats had a double, a triple, and got walked. He also drove in three runs. Quade Dunyon also hit a triple, and drove in two runs, while Brakken Knorr and Alex Villarreal each had a RBI.  Hunter Newland got his seventh stolen base of the year, he is currently third in all of 6A in stolen bases. Quade Dunyon got his third win of the year. He went all five innings, striking out four, walking two. He gave up 3 hits and no runs (zero earned).

In the second game we won again and took the series. This one was a little closer the final score being 8-7. We scored seven runs in the fourth inning alone. Hunter Newland and Jake Hancock drove in half of our runs as they each had two RBIs. Gavin Carlson, Jaxon Slack, Angel Guevarra, and Quade Dunyon drove the other half in as they all had one a piece. Boston Frandsen got the win pitching. In five innings, didn’t strike out or walk anyone. He gave up 10 hits, six runs (four earned). Shadd Jones got the two inning save. He struck out three, gave up two hits and a run (one earned).

In the final game of the series Cyprus must have still had that first game on their mind as they tried to replicate it by beating us 8-0. Not much to say about this one. We had five hits, two from Angel Guevarra, and one each from Jaxon Slack, Quade Dunyon, and Wyatt Swanty. Jaxon Slack was credited with the loss on the mound. In four inning he struck out and walked two. He gave up three hits, and five runs (three earned). Wyatt Swanty pitched three innings striking out and walking one. He gave up five hits, and three runs (two earned).

Our next match up is a three game series against Kearns. Overall we have played well since the opening tournament, going 5-2 since then. Kearns started slow but has won four in a row. Sweeping them would be nice but going 2-1 in this  series won’t be terrible. No one has ran away in the region as everyone is still so close. That series against Cyprus showed that we can compete to win the region, as long as we keep beating Cyprus that is, but I won’t get caught up in something that won’t be determined for another month or so.
