Inversion in Salt Lake

Keeli Jackson, Staff Writer

Another winter brings another wave of inversion to the valley. Inversion is a normal occurrence, however, with the growing population, more pollution has been getting released. Fog is being trapped by a thick layer of pollution, causing the murky air to stay settled in the valley. Flights have been being diverted due to the inversion. Visibility is too low for pilots to land planes since they can’t see the runway or even the airport.

This poor air quality can cause long-term issues, even in very healthy people. People with asthma, COPD, or any other pre-existing conditions are extra sensitive to the bad air quality and may experience more of a negative impact. Air pollution is equivalent to smoking cigarettes in terms of the toll that will be taken on your body. Some of the things being breathed in can stay in the system for months after the air quality gets better, and they can continue to harm someone even afterward.
