LOGAN- Police in northern Utah are investigating whether an intoxicated boy accidentally shot himself while dancing.

On October 5, North Park police were called to Logan Regional Hospital where a 17-year-old boy was seeking treatment for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg.

Witnesses told police that the teen was with three others and had just dropped off a fourth person at an apartment, when the boy “got out of the vehicle and started dancing” according to a search warrant affidavit.

“While he was dancing, the occupants of the car heard a pop and he told them that he thought he shot himself,” the warrant states.

Police went to the apartment complex parking lot and found a shell casing.

When a detective was later able to interview the teen at the hospital, he told the officer he “had gotten out of the vehicle, because ‘he was drunk and they turned up the music,” according to the warrant. “He proceeded to explain to me that he started dancing to the music and the gun went off. He stated that the gun was in the front pocket of his hoodie style sweater.”

North Park police said that based on their investigation, the story of being accidentally shot while dancing is plausible.

However, detectives had not been able to locate the weapon used, and the teen was on probation for a conviction of attempted robbery in Arkansas in 2017, a first-degree felony, as well as felony harassment, and a conviction to theft, a first-degree felony, in 2018.

The current investigation into the teen being a restricted person in possession of firearm and a minor in possession of alcohol continued Friday.
