People who are transgender and have underwent gender reassignment surgery or even hormone therapy will not be able to join or enlist in the Army. The policy will go in effect on April 12, 2019. Summit Defense officials said that it is not a ban on being transgender and that they are talking about gender dysphoria. According to an online dictionary, gender dysphoria means “the condition of feeling one’s emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one’s biological sex.” This means that gender dysphoria is the reason someone is transgender.

ABC News has talked to multiple service members who are transgender and have transitioned. The service members just want to be able to have a job and serve their country. Service officials of the Army Navy, Air force and Marine Corps have testified in front of congress that service members who are transgender have never impeded a unit cohesion.
