DECA

Sofia Rocha, Staff writer

DECA is one of the many clubs that Hunter High school has to offer to it’s students. DECA is ran by one of the teacher’s here at Hunter, Mr. Peoples. As many know, he is a very laid back and funny person and likes to interact with this students, but other than teaching Business Office Specialist, Mr. Peoples is also in charge of DECA. He wants his students to succeed in life and be able to travel to places without worrying about money. DECA offers the opportunity for students to travel to many different places and learn about several different things about that place. If anyone has ever been to Mr. People’s classroom, the first thing you’ll notice is the many different pictures covering his walls and a collage by his desk. These pictures contains many of his students from previous years and pictures of previous fashion shows at Hunter. There are many things that the DECA club has for the students other than the fun field trips, it gives students the chance to make new friends and get to know people. It helps them learn some leadership skills and how to work with other people as a group.

We recently interviewed him and when asked what was the funnest part of being in DECA he said, “Watching kids discover themselves and the world around them and seeing them bond with each other from different cultures.” Mr. Peoples sure knows how to catch everyone’s attention. He was also asked what he wants his students to learn from DECA, to which he responded with, “I want them to be prepared for post high school life and I want them to have confidence in themselves,” those currently in DECA sure are lucky to have a teacher who cares about them. When asked what benefits will his students get in the future after being in DECA in the past he said, “They will learn life skills and how to be a better person.” it also helps you look good when trying to get into a college or university. This club is an open door for anybody who wants to join, there is no need to have a certain GPA or CPA.

Mr. People’s explained that his favorite thing about this club is watching his kids grow more mature and be a better person than they were but staying humble. He later talked about how he wants his students to do the right thing, whether it’s helping the homeless or standing up to someone who’s being bullied, he wants them to always do the right thing. He was asked what one thing his students had taught him and he said that patience was a major thing because sometimes things can get a little bit out of control and that patience is a big thing when it comes to running a club. He said, “Everything you see is DECA, everything you touch is DECA. It’s like oxygen to me. It was everything there’s out there.” while explaining why DECA was really important to him. He was asked what careers could come out of DECA and he responded with, “Any career possible can come out of DECA,” he said. HE was asked if there was a certain goal for DECA this year and he said he wanted to get 300 students to join his club. He says, “DECA challenges you to be a different person and embrace the differences in others. Be better, but stay humble.” During the interview Bryanna Velasco, a DECA officer, walked in and included her to see what DECA was from another point of view. She was asked what was fun about being a DECA officer and said, “Being an officer helps you make more friends and memories. DECA makes you have a fun high school experience instead of a boring one.”
