Sunday, May 5, 42-year-old truck driver Micheal Aaron Jayne from Garrett, Indiana was the subject of a 911 call, which stated someone was standing on the back of his trucking rig as he drove North on Interstate 15. Santaquin Police Sgt. Bill Hooser responded to the call, and once he arrived, he began to help a woman allegedly kidnapped by Jayne, who had escaped from the sleeper section of his trailer. It was during this when Jayne drove his rig into Sgt. Hooser, who died later on the scene.
Jayne fled the area and allegedly stole multiple vehicles in an attempt to escape police. He first ran to a Maverik gas station, where he found an unlocked semi truck with the keys still inside, which he then drove to a home in Mt. Pleasant. He entered this home through the garage and stole a pair of boots as well as a set of keys to a Ford F250, which he drove as he tried to evade police all the way to Vernal.
Police were able to get Jayne to lose control of the vehicle and crash, and he was then apprehended. He was taken to the hospital for about a week to be treated for his injuries, and he was arrested afterward on the following Saturday. He was arrested on the suspicions of kidnapping, burglary, vehicle theft, failure to respond to an officer’s signal to stop, as well as aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer. Sgt. Hooser leaves behind a devastated family of a wife, two daughters, and one granddaughter.
