Donovan Mitchell: up and coming superstar
January 29, 2018
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past two months, you have at least heard the name Donovan Mitchell. Whether it be your friend talking about him or seen someone wearing his jersey you’ve seen the name. He has been lighting the National Basketball Association (NBA) world up for the last couple of months. Ever since November he has been putting up insane dunks and overall great plays. It is crazy to think that he didn’t even thinks he was going to be a first round pick and now he is up for Rookie of the Year award.
He is averaging 19.2 points per game, which leads all rookies by almost 3 points. The last rookie to average 19 points and win Rookie of the Year was Damien Lillard in 2013. The way that he scores he could very well be the first rookie to score 20 points per game since Blake Griffin. Joel Embiid did average 20.2 last year but he only played in 31 games compared to the 47 Donovan has played, and full 82 Blake played.
Scoring has been one of Donovan’s strengths. He became the first rookie since Blake Griffin and seventh active to score 40 points in a game with his 41 point outing in December. He has scored 30 plus points another four times not including the 41 point game.
Donovan has been a dunk machine. Constantly he is in top 10 plays of the day or week with his dunks. It seems every game he has a highlight dunk. Many including myself thought he was going to be in the slam dunk contest in February, but four players have reportedly already accepted their invitations. He will be the Rising stars game and skills competition.
Many Jazz fans thought that this season was going to be a bad one after our best player in Gordon Hayward left in free agency in July. We thought we were going to build around Rudy Gobert and we already found a potential star in Mitchell. We just need him to stay and not leave once he starts becoming that star like Hayward did. Now this season is has been an up and down one. We are currently 10th in the western conference. We can either fight for a playoff spot or try to do bad to get a good draft pick and another great player to add to our core with players like Gobert and Mitchell. No matter what we do I just hope Donovan sees that he is loved here and decides to stay for as long as he possibly can.
