December 8, 2023, was the multicultural assembly at Hunter High School, many different ethnic groups performed a cultural dance or sang a song in their native language. It was beautiful to watch. Then There were little kids, there were women who graduated from Hunter coming to show us their culture through a certain dance. This dance was dedicated to Paula Tahi and Tivani Lopati, the kids who tragically died in a shooting in January of 2022. The performers put so much time and effort into their performance, it was very beautiful to see the support from the family and the audience.
Flags were being waved and many different cultures were being represented, there were even people who had posters spreading awareness about the genocide happening in Palestine. There were posters spreading awareness not only about Palestine but also about the Congo, Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen, China, and Ethiopia. These students later received backlash from our administration and other teachers and students, claiming that they were “embarrassing and unnecessary¨ claiming that “protesting” at an assembly is pointless and not doing anything directly for Palestine. Only spreading awareness to those who are ignorant or don’t know what is happening in general. I’m sure these students also caught the attention of the superintendents. Dr. Nye, Ben Horsley, and Steve Perchon. Who were here on Friday observing our principal, Mr. Oaks. They do not need a reason to spread awareness in a school where people are choosing to be quiet or oblivious to this genocide that is all over the media, these posters had QR codes that brought people to a website giving them all the info they need to be educated about this situation.
