Hunter boy’s basketball season recap
February 21, 2020
The boy’s basketball team finished their season this last week after a loss in the playoffs and now is time for a recap. The team finished 6-17 and 2-8 in region play. The six wins were the most since 2015-2016 season when we went 7-15. We had wins against Lowry (NV), Summit Academy, Providence Hall, Mountain Crest, Granger and Kearns. We also had many other close games. The season ended with a loss against Westlake 80-51 in the first round of the 6A playoffs.
The team averaged 52.2 points per game, including four games with 70+ with the most in the season being 72 in the win against Granger. The leading scorer on the season was Daisean Cash with 13.3 points per game (all of the stats are subject to change as a few of the games stats have yet to be put in). He had several 20+ point games, including 23 in the season opener and had 16 games in double digits of the 20 with stats put in. Darius Jackson was second with 10.2 points per game, and he had eight games in double digits with many others finishing with eight or nine points. Nate Suaste, Josh Harding, Jeremiah Wagstaff, and Tietjen Montano all put up more than five points with 9.2, 9.1, six, and 5.4 points per game respectively. The leading rebounder was Nate Suaste with 7.4 per game. He had two double doubles (10+ in two statistical categories). In fact, he lead the region in rebounds and was seventh in all of 6A.
We gave up 65.3 points per game. However we had eight games in which the other team scored less than 60 points and twice we held teams to just 39 points, once in the win against Summit Academy, the other in the win against Kearns. We got an average of 4.7 steals per game and 1.8 blocks per game. Our block leader was Nate Suaste with one per game, including a four block game against Cyprus. Darius Jackson had seven against Elko (NV). Our steal leader was Daisean Cash with 1.3 per game. Josh Harding was second with 1.1 and Darius Jackson got nearly one per game with 0.8 per game.
Overall the season was one that had it’s highs and lows but also had some positive takeaways. It was the first playoff berth since 2015, our most wins since 2016 and ending it once again better than the prior season. Darius Jackson, Izaiah Valero, Jeremiah Wagstaff, Daisean Cash, Tietjen Montano, and Jakobe Woods were the six seniors who played their final games for us this year. Good luck to you as you continue on in your life. For those Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshman good luck as well as you continue high school. And here is to next year.
