March Madness is the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division 1 men’s basketball tournament, it has been one of the most popular sporting events and has been played annually since 1939. The inaugural tournament began with just 8 teams as the years went by this number expanded until 1985 when the 64-team tournament format begun. This single-elimination tournament includes 68 teams that compete through 7 rounds in order to win the national championship. The tournament kicks off on Selection Sunday which is when the Selection Committee reveals the full NCAA tournament bracket including all teams and seeds (ranking that each team receives #1-16). The tournament accommodated for the expansion to 68 teams by adding a new round to the format known as the ” First Four” where four games after Selection Sunday determine which of 8 teams will advance to the first round of the tournament. In the First Four round the teams competing are the 4 lowest- seeded teams automatic qualifiers and then the 4 lowest-seeded at-large teams. This round is what quickly eliminates 4 teams from the tournament. The fifth round of the tournament is when only 4 teams remain and is known as the “Final Four” where those 4 teams compete for the chance to play in the championship game.
