Super Bowl LIV
February 5, 2020
This past Sunday was the one and only Super Bowl Sunday. The biggest football game of the year on the biggest stage. This years rendition was a match up between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. The game started out pretty evenly, with the score tied at 10-10 at halftime. In the third quarter however, the 49ers took some momentum and scored 10 more points making the game 20-10. That was the score until 6:13 left in the game, then an amazing comeback happened. Chiefs Quarterback (QB) Patrick Mahomes threw a touchdown (TD) to Tight End Travis Kelce with the 6:13 left. Then the 49ers punted the ball back to them. Mahomes then lead them down the field and scored another TD toss to Running back Damien Williams. The score was now 24-20 in Kansas City’s favor. The 49ers then once again couldn’t score and turned it over on downs. They needed a miracle to win, and instead what happened was Damien Williams ran the ball in for a 38-yard TD making it 31-20 with a little over minute left. On the next drive 49er’s QB Jimmy Garoppolo threw an interception and the game was officially over, the Kansas City Chiefs were Super Bowl Champions.
Despite throwing two interceptions, Mahomes was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) with 286 passing yards 29 rushing yards and three total TDs. He becomes the youngest-QB to ever win it, and the second youngest to ever win it behind Marcus Allen. For the Chiefs it was their first Super Bowl win since Super Bowl IV (four). They had to overcome 10+ deficits in all three playoff games. For their coach, Andy Reid, it is his first Super Bowl win as a head coach in his second ever appearance (He previously lead the Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl XXXIX (39) in 2004).
The game gives back-to back Super Bowl wins for the American Football Conference (AFC) and back-to-back loses for National Football Conference West teams, last year the Los Angeles Rams lost to the New England Patriots. It is exciting to see what next year brings. Both of these teams will more than likely be competitive. The 49ers will still have a stout defense and the Chiefs will still have Patrick Mahomes, who in two full seasons as the starter as won an MVP and Super Bowl MVP and he is still just 24 years old.
