Celtics and Lakers rivalry

Diego Garay, Staff Writer

The Celtics and Lakers rivalry started after meeting in the finals for the first time in 1959. After that they have met several other times, but on record they have met each other in the finals 12 times. Both teams also have the highest amount of championships. The Lakers have won 16 championships and the Celtics have won 17 championships, both combining to make 33 out of 72 NBA championships. They have always not liked each other, ever since they met that day in 1959 where Bill Russell had to play against the Jerry West-led Lakers where the Celtics won. That one in the 1980 is when the Lakers and Celtics met in the finals again. This time the teams were led by 2 different starsĀ from LA, one was Magic Johnson. Then from the Celtics it was Larry Bird. In those years the Lakers were called the showtime Lakers because everyone wanted to see them and they were always putting on a show for their fans. In 1990 both teams were rebuilding their rosters, but in the 2000s they saw each other 2 times, once in 2008 and again in 2010, where the Celtics beat the Lakers in 6 games. In 2010 the Lakers beat the Celtics in 7 games. The rivalry hasn’t happened since then, but maybe in the future it could definitely happen again.
