United Methodist Church proposes split over gay marriage

Leaders of the United Methodist Church have decided to propose a split in order to resolve debates that are sparked over same-sex marriage. They say they want to recognize the dignity, integrity, equality, as well as respect of every individual person. This split will give the church a hopeful future, as said by Keith Boyette. It will cause years upon years of dispute to be put behind the church, thus giving them a fresh start.

“Both factions love their take on the issues more than the continuance of the United Methodist Church. The bishops — unable to lead continuing discussion of our differences — have now decided that the best they can do is to oversee church disintegration.” -William Willimon

There will be a worldwide conference held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 5-15, 2020, in regards to the approval or denial of the split; this conference will have nearly 850 delegates from around the world. Andrew Ponder Williams, a gay candidate for the LGBT clergy, believes that this split is a resolution that will allow the Methodist church to share the love with all people unconditionally.
