If you are considering being a pet owner for the very first time, there is some factors you have to consider. Such as what pet you want to have and the cost of it and other expenses. So I came up with a list of three of the most common first pets to have that are easier to take care of.

The most common pet most people start off with is a freshwater fish. They are easier to take care of and tend to be more affordable over a saltwater fish. The average cost of a freshwater fish is around ten dollars, but can be around thirty depending on species. The freshwater fish can live in mostly any sized bowl, and fish food is around ten dollars. The fish food however will last for a few months, because fish don’t eat much and don’t require a  lot of maintenance. Without a filter you should clean the fish tank or bowl about twice a week, but with a filter it is a good idea to clean it once every two weeks to make sure equipment is working.

Another popular choice for a first pet is a guinea pig, they live approximately around five to eight years. The average price for a guinea pig is around twenty-five dollars, but can be as high as forty dollars. The cage for this animal costs around forty to eighty dollars, which is quite pricey. This pet might be a great choice for a first pet however, you must consider that guinea pigs have more high maintenance than most pets. You have to clean your pets cage one to three times a week, plus changing the bedding. Which costs you about thirty to forty each month not to mention rodent food which adds another five to ten a month. If you have the time to care properly for this pet, its a perfect fit, however most of us don’t have the time.  Leaving us with other options for a first pet.

Such as a pet bird, more specifically a small parrot. These birds can live for an extended period of time. The small parrot lives between twenty-five too thirty years, although some pet parrots are reported to have lived as long as sixty years. However parrots have a wider price range some parrots being worth around one hundred and fifty, while other parrots can cost as high as three thousand. Though most pet birds you might find at a local pet store cost below one hundred dollars. Depending on which bird you might choose as your feathery friend you might want to look into some information on costs of cages, and the average cost of food for the type of bird your looking to purchase.

This is only a small sample of information for first time pet owners. Many people prefer others pets such as dogs and cats, which is great! Everybody has differences in what animals they prefer to own as pets, so it is important to remember to look into it before deciding on what animal you want.
