Utah’s homelessness problem

Zoey Mcneil, Staff Writer

Utah has a increasing amount of homeless people and children which leads to over capacity in the shelters.  The state officials noticed that many people don’t have homes during the winter time and often freeze in the record breaking temperatures. They took many years to come up with some solutions to fix this issue we are facing and in the beginning of 2019 they told us that he South Salt Lake Planning Commission and State officials decided to tear down the ‘Road Home” shelter downtown and build a men’s resource center in South Salt Lake City to make space for those losing that place to stay. This is a new idea coming into play because women’s shelters have been open for so many years and now a men’s shelter is being introduced. This recourse center can sleep 700 men.
There is a lot of controversy going on about the closing of the ‘Road Home’ and opening a men’s center instead, because the ‘Road Home’ now sleeps about 400 more people than the new men’s center will. Regardless of the controversy and the protests, the ‘Road Home’ is bound to get shut down before December 2019.
The State officials want to get an end the old way things were done and start anew. This fresh way of thinking is starting up the controversy all over the state. Yet these officials think that once it gets up and running the people will like this new way. Not only is the men’s resource center being built, now officials are finding landlords that will help the homeless get a place to stay. There are also motel tickets one can get, which will give you a room for free to stay in for the night. Many more opportunities are in the works like more housing being found for these people. The overall plan is to end the rising homelessness rates and come up with better options, plus governmental help for when it is needed.
