10 hour school days
November 8, 2019
Kamala Harris, a United States senator, has proposed a bill that will make school days 10 hours long. Harris states that the purpose of this is to keep a child’s school schedule from colliding with a parent’s work schedule. Many parents have to work fewer hours in order to accommodate their children. With this new bill, a typical school day would last from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
500 schools that have a high ratio of low-income families will receive up to 5 million dollars over the course of 5 years. This money will be meant to be used to develop athletic, academic, as well as enrichment opportunities for students. Many people are in agreement that it is wrong to value the money over the well-being of their children. With such a long school day, people believe it won’t be good for the students both physically and mentally. Along with the well-being of children, people believe their children should be building independence by not relying on their parents at all times. At a certain point in a child’s life, they should be learning independence to be prepared for adulthood. The last big argument being made is a child’s freedom. Children love to go out and play, the extra 3 hours of instruction would take away time for a child to be creative and enjoy themselves, and parents aren’t happy about it. Parents want what is best for their children, and many don’t agree that this is what is best. They believe that this is more in favor of parents than it is students.
