Package theft
November 8, 2019
Most everyone has probably bought something online before, and sometimes no one is home when that package arrives. Around 4 in every 10 people have had a package stolen from their front porch, and they can all agree that it’s very irritating.
After a study was released from Security.org, we learned that Utah happens to be number 10 in the nation for package theft. 2,092 packages are stolen from every 100,000 people. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but when taking into account the 3 million people in Utah, that is 62,760 packages stolen. Massachusetts, the state with the least amount of packages stolen, is at 1,078. Then, there is Washington D.C. at number 1 with 3,650 stolen per every 100,000 people.
Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah, happens to be in 6th place for the worst cities when it comes to package theft. Luckily for us, Logan is the 3rd city with the least amount of package theft. So, in a way, you could say it balances out, that is unless the population is taken into account. Logan’s population is 50,000 whereas Salt Lake City’s population is 200,000.
Now, how can we avoid getting packages stolen? Some websites allow you to give delivery instructions. You could write to hide the package behind a bush, or even have the delivery man hide it under the welcome mat if the package is small enough. There is also the option of cameras, get a camera by your front door. Then if your package does get stolen, you will at least know what the thief looked like. Some people have packages delivered to family or friend’s houses if they know that person will be home when the package is expected to arrive.
