Q: How can I stay on top of my school work and homework when I work up to 4 days a week?
A: It is all about time management. Making yourself a simple schedule and setting time aside specifically for homework and studying is a huge help. It takes a lot of work and motivation, but is so worth it in the end. Having a student planner is also a very useful tool. Using the planner, you can write down all of your assignments that are due, any projects that you need to be working on, and even when your next test is. You can also schedule out your weeks outside of schoolwork, such as laundry days, plans with friends, and even your work schedule. One final tip is to make sure to always stay on top of your assignments, assuring that your work load never gets out of hand.
Q: My math teacher and I have been butting heads the whole first quarter, and it makes it hard for me to learn in that class. What should I do?
A: If you haven’t already, you should make an appointment with your counselor. See what your options are for switching out of that class. If that is not possible, maybe have a talk with your teacher. I understand that teachers can be very stubborn and hard to talk to, and if that is the case, I would try to make some friends in the class to help you study and understand the subjects being taught.
Q: I am having a hard time in my honors classes but my parents won’t let me switch out of them. Should I go behind their back and switch out?
A: Doing something against your parents advice is never the way to go. Even when you feel it is best for you and your future. I would suggest making an appointment with your counselor and getting one of your parents to come in with you. Having the appointment with your parents may open their eyes to your struggle, and hopefully give you an opportunity to be switched out of some of your hardest classes. If that is not what happens, then hopefully your counselor can help you with studying tips, and ways to lighten your load.
