Vandalism within school

Xitlali Martinez, Staff Writer

Vandalism takes place almost everywhere, but there’s one place people tend to turn a blind eye to: school. Schools are full of vandalism ranging from minimal to severe. Specifically within Hunter High School the majority of the vandalism is pretty minimal, but it’s still very respectful. The most common form of vandalism within schools is littering. Littering, although it sounds small it is a very big problem because it’s not only something that’s damaging the environment, but it is also a major inconvenience for the school janitors. Custodians are very underappreciated because there is a limited amount of custodians and at times students take advantage of them. A custodians job is to look after the school and ensuring it stays clean and they also do minor maintenance. Students are confusing this and treating custodians as if they were servants. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to clean up after yourself, there’s trashcans scattered all over the school, there’s bound to be one near by when you need it. Littering within the classroom is also something that can be easily taken care of as long as people throw away their trash in the proper place. The school parking lot is scattered with debris that students leave behind without consideration for the environment or the school. Another form of vandalism within schools is writing on desks or bathroom stalls, often times what is written is vulgar and rude and is difficult to remove. As students we need to learn how to respect our custodians and our environment. There are many things you can do to help out such as making sure you clean up after yourself and if you see trash pick it up even if it’s not yours because it’s a good thing to do. Also make sure that you keep your fellow students in check as well.
