Fall break

How long should fall break be, and when should it fall on the calendar?

It’s no secret that most people love a good break. It has arrived, October, and in just a couple weeks we will arrive at fall break. This year, we will be getting Thursday and Friday off. School should continue as scheduled on the Monday following the break.

Thursday through to Sunday – 4 days. Two of these 4 days are the weekend, which we would already have off anyway. When I think “break”, I think at least 5 days. If 2 of those 5 days are weekend days, then that’s fine with me, because we still have 3 more days of the break during the week. 4 days isn’t far from 5, it’s just 1 number off, however, thinking of it in terms of how much of that is days that we already have off makes it seem like more. If we had a 5-day break, then 60% of the break is days we would have already had off, whereas if we only had a 4-day break, then half of that break would be those days that we’d already have off.

This so-called “break” is scheduled a week before Halloween, a week before a holiday. Now, here’s my question: why can’t fall break just be pushed to the week of Halloween? Think about it, Halloween falls on a Thursday, a school night. Halloween is all about being out at night, so obviously, students are going to be out that night, and many may possibly even be out all night. There won’t be many students showing up the following day because many will not have gotten any sleep. It’s bound to happen, so why not help the students out and push the break forward a week? Same goes for teachers, some may be out that night with friends or family for who knows how long? Pushing fall break forward another week would help many students as well as staff.
