Should proficiency based grading be spread school wide

Haelei VanGend, Staff Writer

Proficiency based grading is being used in some, but not all, classrooms at Hunter High school. Some students believe that using proficiency based grading between every teacher instead of just some would be better and more manageable with grades.

Students claim that proficiency based grading is more practical, faster, and students understand how to follow it better. If all teachers at Hunter High used this grading it would be more clear to not only students but also parents. When each student has teachers that use different grading systems it becomes hard to keep up with.

With some claiming proficiency based grading should be used school wide there are also some claiming it is not the ideal way of grading. Using proficiency based grading can be difficult to learn and understand for students transferring if they have never used it before. It is straying from the original, district wide, ways of grading.

Using proficiency based grading can make grading quicker and easier to understand. Although with the disadvantage of the many transfers we get into our school yearly, it could become difficult for some to learn how to do assignment with proficiency based grading. Students prefer grading to be the same school round against each teacher choosing how they would rather grade.
