LGBTQ+ allies and queer women take over the 2019 Grammys

One year ago, men won many of the major categories of the 2018 Grammys and “Recording Academy president Neil Portnow placed the blame on women, saying they needed to “step up” their game in order to be recognized with a golden statue,” (www.out.com). This year was quite the contrary. Multiple women won major categories and blew audience’s mind with stunning performances that reminded everyone the key role of women in the music industry. There were also multiple references to queerness.

Brandi Carlile is a lesbian folk singer who was the most-nominated female artist and third most-most nominated overall. Dua Lipa is not queer herself, but is loved by many gays. She the award for “best new artist” and even shaded Neil Portnow during her speech. Kasey Musgraves is a country singer and a huge LGBT ally performed her song “Rainbow,” an inspiring song of hope that has also evolved into a “queer anthem.” Lastly, Cardi B took home “Best Rap Album.” There were many other women and LGBT allies who were nominated and won and their wins definitely inspired everyone in their path.
