Being biracial

Ammon Stevens, Staff Writer

Two people of different races marrying and having kids is widely excepted here in 2019. In fact, my Mom and Dad are two different races. My Mom is Native American and my Dad is Caucasian. My Mom is from Crystal, New Mexico. She is familiar with most traditions. I did not grow up immersed in my culture so I do not know a lot about it. I try to learn by asking my Mom and Grandma questions, but it sometimes feels a little overwhelming. So I try to obtain as much as I can so that I can have a better understanding.

I really wish I started being curious earlier on in life. I only know how to say a couple words in Navajo (that’s our tribe). In a way, I feel bad for not learning a lot of traditions and the culture in general. I hope to learn a lot so that the culture will stay alive.
