Hunter baseball week 7 Recap

Gage Versteeg, Sports Editor

In week seven we had a series against our rival Granger. The first game was not the best as we lost 7-4. They scored all seven runs in the fifth and seventh innings including six in the fifth inning. Gavin Carlson drove in half our runs while Hunter Newland and Quade Dunyon drove in the other two. We did steal six more bases including three from Eugene Villarreal. Jaxon Slack and Shadd Jones pitched. In four and two-thirds inning, Jaxon struck out six, walked three, gave up four hits and six runs (all earned.) In two and a third inning, Shadd stuck out two, didn’t walk anyone and gave up two hits and one run (zero earned.)

The second game was much better as we won 11-3. Jake Hancock had three RBIs (runs batted in) Angel Guevara had two, while Eugene Villarreal and Quade Dunyon each had one. We had five more stolen bases, two from Eugene Villarreal and Wyatt Swanty and one from Jake Hancock. Boston Frandsen and Wyatt Swanty both pitched. In four and two-thirds innings, Boston struck out five and walked two. He gave up seven hits and two runs (two earned.) Wyatt struck out one, walked one and gave up one hit and one run (zero earned) in two and a third innings.

The third game wasn’t the best game. We only had one hit, coming from Alex Villarreal, and one run, drove in by Quade Dunyon. We had base runners, three people got walked, four reached on an error and two got on buy fielders choice (fielders choice means that whoever got the ball didn’t throw the runner out at first but rather choose to try to get another player out, an example would be if the third basemen got a grounder and instead of throwing to first he would throw home trying to get the runner at third out at home). Eugene Villarreal got yet another stolen base he now has 12 on the year and six just in this series. We had two sophomore pitcher in this game in Wyatt Swanty and Shadd Jones. In six and two-thirds innings, Shadd struck out seven, walked two, gave up six hits and three runs (two earned.) Wyatt didn’t strike out or walk anyone. He gave up three hits and four runs (two earned.)

Now I would like to point out the obvious and say this was not the best series. Granger had about the same record as Kearns before it started and we swept Kearns and put 36 runs in three games on them. I don’t know if we were tired or Granger is better than their record indicates but winning this series would have been big, as now every game is a must win if we want to win Region as we are the only team that has beat Cyprus and they now have a one less region loss than us. I hope I didn’t jinx Jaxon Slack when I said he could hit 30 RBIs as he didn’t get a single one that series. He still hit well just didn’t score anyone. I think the he will do good in the Hillcrest series. As I just said we play Hillcrest next week (as of my writing this technically this week in fact the first game was already played but i’m not going to spoil anything.) We currently sit 10-7 and 6-3 in region play while Hillcrest is 2-15 and 2-8 in region play so we could have another Kearns series on our hands but you’ll have to come back next week so you can see how we do.
