Hunter baseball Week 6 Recap

Gage Versteeg, Sports Editor

Our week six went by fast as we had a double-header on Monday and the third and final game of the week was on Wednesday. This week we played and swept Kearns. We scored a total of 36 runs in the three game series. We now sit at 9-5 and are 5-1 in region play. Next week we take on Granger.

In the first game we won by a score of 13-9. Jaxon Slack had another good game with three RBIs, hitting another home run and double. Alex Villarreal had three RBIs as well. Gavin Carlson and Shadd Jones each drove in two, while Brakken Knorr and Jake Hancock drove the final two runs in. Shadd Jones got the win on the mound. In one and two-thirds innings, he struck two out, walked one. He gave up seven hits and six runs (one earned). Quade Dunyon did good in three and one-third innings. He struck out five while only walking one. He gave up three hits and two runs (both earned).

The second game was much closer and not as high scoring with the final score being 3-2. Boston Frandsen and Jaxon Slack each drove in a run. Jaxon Slack had another double, he just continues to get extra base hits. Chase Dolar also hit a double. Hunter Newland stole another base, he will probably be towards the top of 6A when its all said and done. Jaxon Slack did great on the mound. In six innings he struck out eight, gave up three hits, two runs (one earned). He should have gotten the win but the game was tied when he left. Boston Frandsen got the win. In one inning, he gave up a hit and struck out one. In my opinion Jaxon should have gotten the win and Boston should have gotten the save but that didn’t happen.

In the third game we scored 20 points. The final score was 20-9 and just about everyone had a great game. Gavin Carlson, Jaxon Slack, Hunter Newland, and Jake Hancock all had three RBI games. Boston Frandsen, Angel Guevara, and Alex Villarreal each had two RBIs. Eugene Villarreal drove in the last run. Angel Guevara hit a double and a triple while Hunter Newland hit a triple. Jake Hancock stole two bases while Hunter Newland, Wyatt Swanty, and Eugene Villarreal each stole one a piece. Boston got the start. In four and two-thirds innings he, struck out and walked two. He gave up 11 hits, and nine runs (seven earned). Chase Dolar got the final out of game on the mound in his third of an inning.

This series was a great one especially on the offensive side. 36 runs in three games is really impressive and that’s with scoring three in one of the games. Jaxon Slack has had an amazing last two to three weeks. He currently has 16 RBIs but at this rate he could end up with close to 30.  Hunter Newland has been great with nine stolen bases. He is second in all of 6A. If he stills one a game then he could get close to 20. Team wise we have the best region record at 5-1. The next two weeks we play the two teams ranked at the bottom in Granger and Hillcrest. After that we play each team one more time. I can see us going undefeated the rest of the way especially if we play the way we played this week. All we need to do is make sure we keep winning games that we should. Cyprus is 4-2 in region play so, if we are tied when we play on May 2nd, then that could decide who wins region this year.
