On April 6, a bus carrying players and personal from the Humboldt Broncos was t-boned by a truck just outside of Armley, Saskatchewan, Canada, killing 15 players and coaches and injuring 14 more. The crash occurred on the way to Nipawin to play in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs to play the Nipawin Hawks. The game was ultimately cancelled. On April 7, many National Hockey League, Canadian Hockey League, and Canadian Junior Hockey League teams payed their respects and offered tributes. The Nashville Predators and Columbus Blue Jackets played the Canadian national anthem even though neither of the teams were from Canada. The Winnipeg Jets and Chicago Blackhawks jerseys read “Broncos” rather than the players last name. Other teams had moments of silence and/or decals on their helmets to honor the team. One survivor Ryan Straschnitzki, who was paralyzed from the waist down in the accident, has already told his parents that he will play sledge hockey in the Paralympics Games.
