Dress code

Kaydence Richens

As we slowly come to the end of third quarter, the weather is starting to get warmer. Winter is ending and spring is on its way. We all know Hunter High has a semi-strict policy on what to and what not to wear, so no matter how warm it gets, we as students have to remember our school’s dress code.

I wouldn’t say Hunter has a super strict policy, because they really allow everybody to wear what they want, but they definitely don’t allow certain things. I understand some of it, but most of it I really don’t. I’ve always questioned why there is strict policies on what we can and can’t wear, but I’ve never understood some of the reasons I’ve been given.

I’ve always understood the part of not being able to wear the same color on top of each other, because that can lead to being gang related. We don’t want anybody getting hurt, we come to school to get an education, not to be afraid of others. We’re supposed to be a part of a safe environment for our learning and in order to do that we have to keep anything gang related away, as much as we possibly can.

I’ve never understood why the administration is so strict with what females at our school wear. They say they don’t want it to distract the male from their learning. Does seeing a female’s stomach, shoulder, back, or upper leg really distract a male from their learning; I would say it actually doesn’t. Why is the administration so worried about the male’s education and not so worried about the females, taking time out of a females day to dress code them, and send them home because they’re showing “too much skin” is beyond me because that’s taking time away from their education.
