Preventing school shootings

Austin Jensen, staff writer

What do you think about the idea of teachers being armed with a gun? Many people, including our president, think this is a good idea. For example, “…History shows that a school shooting lasts, on average, 3 minutes. It takes police and first responders approximately 5 to 8 minutes to get to site of crime. Highly trained, gun adept, teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly, before police arrive.”1  Other people think this is a bad idea.  Richard Myers clarifies, “I don’t know of any police chief who believes this is a good idea, police officers receive months of firearms training; they get instruction on decision-making and de-escalation. Even with all of that, police have been criticized that they have been too quick to use deadly force.”2  I feel as though arming teachers with a gun is a good idea. If teachers were to be armed with a gun school shootings could be stopped a lot faster, that is if they are responsible with handling the situation. Although it is the law enforcement groups’ responsibility, they don’t get there fast enough to stop the shooting, which makes arming teachers with a gun better.
