Super Bowl MVP #9 Nick Foles raising the Vince Lombardi Trophy

I am about to list the names of quarterbacks who have beaten Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. There were two: Eli Manning and Nick Foles. That’s it. Manning did it twice with the New York Giants while Foles did it with Philadelphia on Sunday. This is the Eagles first Super Bowl victory and first championship since 1960. It was the third time Brady lost and fifth time the New England Patriots lost, tying the record for most Super Bowl losses with the Denver Broncos.

The game itself was pretty exciting as well as record breaking. Tom Brady threw for a postseason record 505. The Patriots had the most total yards with 613. The Patriots were down at half 22-12 in a wacky score due to missed kicks by both teams. Many people admittedly, including myself, thought the Eagles had it in the bag. There was no way they were going to lose the way they had been playing. In the first possession of the second half, the Patriots drive down the field and score. Here we go, Philadelphia is about to know how it feels to be a football team from the state of Georgia (both the Atlanta FalconsĀ  and Georgia Bulldogs lost leads in championship games). The Patriots had cut the lead down to 29 to 26. Early in the fourth quarter, a Philly field goal put it to six points but Rob Gronkowski’s touchdown gave New England a one point lead. Philadelphia drove down field and scored on a somewhat controversial touchdown by Zach Ertz with around two minutes left. They didn’t get the two-point conversion and now Brady had two minutes to score six points. New England was about to get Super Bowl trophy number six. It was second down with two yards to go and Brandon Graham got the only sack of the game, a strip-sack, and the Eagles had the ball again. A field goal put them up by eight and a Hail Mary heave to the end zone came up incomplete. Philadelphia won the Super Bowl. Nick Foles won MVP with his 373 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass, becoming the first quarter back to do that in super bowl history.

As previously mentioned this is the first Super Bowl win for the Eagles. The best part is that this is without Carson Wentz, who was there quarterback before getting injured late in the season. That’s right Nick Foles went from backup to the possible MVP in Wentz to Super Bowl MVP in little over a month. Wentz might not be back tell the fourth or fifth game next season so do the Eagles keep Foles so when Wentz comes back they still have a decent record or do they trade him while his value is high. We will find out they next season officially begins in March until then party on Philly, you earned it.
