My response to the Herriman Telegram “incident”
January 29, 2018
“Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech or the press.” This is just an excerpt of our 1st Amendment.
Now we already know what this is referring to.. Sandra Riesgraf…Jordan School District spokeswoman…I personally think that it’s all bogus; this needs to stop. I got a chance to skim over news articles, and I found absolutely nothing that can be taken as offensive, and/or discriminative. He wasn’t choosing sides, he wasn’t slandering anybody, and he surely wasn’t saying anything offensive in his writing. It’s only stating the truth and yes the truth hurts, but it’s well, the truth. It was all out of innocence, and Riesgraf, who is supposedly the one to have took it down, is being a little dramatic. You have to read these articles with a pinch of salt, because journalists mean the best, and what the Herriman High School’s administrative staff is doing is not only going against the freedom to post, but overreacting over the truth.
Now there is a petition to uncensor the Herriman Telegraph so that they might have freedom over what the newspaper can publish for something that shouldn’t even be censored at all. I signed the petition, and I highly recommend that you do, too. It’s sad, it’s very sad. Also me and my mom had a discussion on this, and she even thinks it’s highly stupid that they had to take that down.
This doesn’t just affect the writer but the entire staff of that newspaper. This shows how little freedom the journalists have over their writing, and it’s not morally right. If at any point that the Herriman High School staff comes to their senses, and realize that this wasn’t or was not meant to be offensive, then we’ll be waiting. For now all we can do is write, and wait.
