Hunter Baseball weeks 2-3 recap

Gage Versteeg, Sports Editor

After coming home from the St. George tournament with a record of 1-3 we quickly hit the road again and went out to play Herriman. The game was a close 3-1 but sadly it was in Herriman’s favor. Jake Hancock had a team high two hits while Jaxon Slack, Boston Frandsen, Angel Guevara, Quade Dunyon, and Brakken Knorr also had hits. Boston Frandsen drove in the only run. We had a solid five stolen bases from four different players. Jaxon Slack had two, Boston Frandsen, Wyatt Swanty, and Jake Hancock had one each as well. Quade Dunyon took to the mound again and did a solid job in six innings. He struck out five and walked three, he gave up seven hits and three runs (two earned).

We were back home on Friday as we took on Tooele. We won 4-1 and took our record to 2-4. Angel Guevara and Hunter Newland each had two hits.  Angel Guevara, Quade Dunyon, and Alex Villarreal each drove in a run. Jaxon Slack had a good day on the mound. In seven innings he struck out five and walked zero, he gave up seven hits but only one run (zero earned) and got the win his first of the young season.

On Monday and the only game of week three, We hosted Uintah and once again won by a score of 8-0, our first shut out of the season. Jaxon Slack had a team high three hits and had a run batted in (RBI). Gavin Carlson, Angel Guevara, and Hunter Newland each had two hits. Boston Frandsen and Jake Hancock each had two RBIs. Hunter Newland stole three bases and has a team leading six of our 19 stolen bases on the year. Quade Dunyon got his second win of the season. In seven innings he struck out two, walked zero, gave up two hits and obviously zero runs.

We play two more games before region play starts up. One is on Monday, March 26th at Judge Memorial. The second is at Highland on Thursday, March 29th. Both of the games we can we if we play how we did against Tooele and Uintah. Staying around .500 as we go into region could be big as no one has really ran away in our region quite yet. It is a close battle with us, Cyprus, and Granger so far, but it is only a couple of games into the year. We do start region play in two weeks to Cyprus so we will see how we will do against the one of the better teams in our region.
