St. George baseball tournament

Over the weekend, the baseball team went down to St. George to play in Pine View High School’s baseball tournament. We went 1-3 with a win over North Sevier and losses to host Pine View, Moapa Valley, and Grantsville.  We beat North Sevier by a score of 9-2. Jaxon Slack hit a home run and drove in two runs. Quade Dunyon and Hunter Newland each got two  RBIs (runs batted in) as well. Gavin Carlson, Alex Villarreal, and Jake Hancock each got an RBI as well. Quade Dunyon got the win. In five innings pitched he had five strikeouts, and allowed just two hits and two runs, only one earned run.

The second game was up against host school Pine View. We didn’t do as well in that game as we had four total hits. Two of those hits came from Hunter Newland. Jaxon Slack and Brakken Knorr had the other two. Boston Frandsen drove the only run in. He also pitched four innings and finished with three strikeouts, six hits, and five runs ( three earned runs) in four innings. Shadd Jones struck three out and allowed one hit in two innings. We lost the game by a score of 5-1.

The third game was against Grantsville. This game was just not our game as in the end we had zero hits and zero runs scored. Angel Guevara reached base on a walk, Alex Villarreal was hit by a pitch and Gavin Carlson reached base on an error. Jaxon Slack was given the loss pitching. In 3 three and two thirds innings, he struck out five, walked three, gave up three hits and seven runs (four earned).  Gavin Carlson struck out three, gave up two hits and five runs (Zero earned) in one and a third innings. In this game we had six errors. That’s part of the reason the score was 12-0, rather than a 4-0 score. Although you can’t blame anyone on errors as even the pros make errors, and you can’t blame anyone for having zero hits all game as even pro teams have had games where they get no hits. No one should have their head down low after this game and should instead look to the next game.

The next couple of games before region games start are against Herriman, Tooele, Uintah, Judge Memorial, and Highland. A couple of wins in during that team could start the season off great. Even if we play how we did against Pine View we can win ball games if we just get a little bit more offense. Obviously it would be nice to play how we did against North Sevier every game but that would be difficult to do every game when there is two-three games every week, eventually they would get a little tired.

In the fourth game we played Moapa Valley, a team from Overton, Nevada. The score was 9-4 in favor of Moapa Valley. Sadly I couldn’t find any stats from the game. Overall, like I said before we went 1-3 during the tournament but it is very early in the season and we could win some games before region games start.
