My new gecko

Austin Jensen, staff writer

I recently purchased a new gecko. She is the sweetest little thing ever and she is very cute. I named her Elliot. Geckos are incredibly fascinating. When I first got her she wouldn’t let me pet her and it was hard to pick her up. Now that she knows me, I can hold her and pet her when I want and she won’t try to run away. The color of her skin got really pale yesterday which was scary, I thought she was sick. Turns out she was just getting ready to shed her skin. Her color is back now.

Geckos are pretty easy to take care of. They eat crickets for the most part but you can also feed them meal-worms. They normally eat four to five crickets a day. The thing that was a struggle for me was keeping her temperature in the right range. The overhead heating lamp made her cage too hot so I got an underneath heating pad and everything is much better now. There are certain temperatures for day and night that you have to watch. Another thing that is useful for a gecko is a “wet box”. It is basically just a tuber ware that has wet paper towels in the bottom of it. This helps to keep the gecko moisturized.

If you want a little friend to keep you company, a leopard gecko is definitely a good choice. They aren’t too expensive and they are so cute and sweet. You just have to know how to take care of them and how to get to know them. Remember to always do your research before purchasing any animal. You want to be prepared and know what to look out for when taking care of your little buddy.
